Intel's New Core i7 Processors: Turbo Boost a tank of Nitrous or just a higher gear?
Shopping for a new laptop for college and I want it to have a processor capable of up to 3.0GHz, and I happen along Intel's New Core i7 820QM in my build options listing a Base Frequency of 1.73GHz and "Turbo Boost" up to 3.06GHz. I did some research, and I like that the processor is capable running at the lower frequency, because to my understanding this reduces wear and power consumption. But I want a processor that can run at 3GHz for hours while I am using CAD, doing media editing, and playing video games. The wording "turbo Boost" just makes me unsure.
Is "turbo boost" just their marketing, and the processor is designed to operate at different speeds to optimize efficiency or is really a shot of adrenaline?
Turbo boost is more like a tank of nitrous. If all cores are running, turbo boost does not work. When turbo boost is on, it shuts down unused cores, and uses that power to run the clocks up on the cores that are being used. If you are going to be using CAD for hours on end, get a desktop with Nvidia's Quadro, or ATI's Fire GL work station graphics cards. But there not so good for games, and expensive. To me it sounds like you are really going to be using your computer more than what a laptop is designed to do.
