How difficult is it to replace backlight inverter boards on a 42 inch Vizio tv, any soldering required?
I took my tv to a local repair guy and come to find out that both inverters on my tv have to be replaced he informed me this would cost around $475.. well I bought this tv for $700 two years ago and don't want to pay that much. I was wondering if this is something that I could do myself? I don't know much about tv repair but form all the videos and forums it looks fairly easy.. any help would be greatly appreciated..
I would be very leery of this diagnosis. I have been in the business since '75, and fixing LED TVs since their inception. I have rarely ever seen two inverters going bad at the same time. Usually only one goes bad or the back light inside the panel goes bad. Vizio parts usually don't include the inverter boards separate from the panel, but some models are different, and I don't have your model to look it up.
Usually if a lamp (must buy a complete panel to get these parts) goes bad the back lights will light up with the exception of the bad one. Then after the inverter sees the current draw is wrong, it shuts them all down. So in a dark room turning it on time and again you may see a horizontal area that is darker than the rest. This is where the bad lamp is located.. If this is what you see then it is either the associated inverter with a bad stage or the lamp.
If the back lights never start up, then it could be a bad power supply feeding the main inverter, or the main inverter. If half of the (top or bottom) is dark then that inverter is the problem. This could be either the main or the slave inverter.
