Calibration by eye gets you only so far. Which moderately-priced monitor calibration tool yields the best results? Pantone Huey? Xrite Eye-One? Something else?
I have been using the Monaco EZ color. It is an xrite product from a few years ago.
I used it to calibrate my monitors, and my printer as well as the scanner. It works awsome. It took my printer from being quite good, to being near-perfect.
If you are only doing your monitor, then you can get away with just about any of the products, and they will all do a great job. But, if you are doing you printer as well, then you need to spend the big bucks (500$ or more) and get the rest of the equipment to do so. It's well worth it if you like to print a lot. You will also need to redo the printer calibration every time you change ink.
