What are the dangers of living close to high voltage power lines?
We are looking for a new apartment for my family and found a perfect one in the perfect location, great size and at a great price, BUT I noticed it is on the highest floor with a high voltage power line about 50 yards away. I have heard that living close to high voltage power lines have been blamed for everything from brain cancer to poor mental health, but was wondering if any of this stuff has been proven or if it is just paranoia/old wives tales?
It is known that some kinds of radiated energy can cause cellular changes in living things.
However, no actual link has even been established between proximity to power lines and actual health problems. There was one study in Colorado that suggested that there could be a cluster of cases of childhood leukemia in a neighborhood in the vicinity of a power line. When that study was examined in more detail, it was found to be flawed and the results could not be believed.
Curiously, there was also a report that came out of the Soviet Union in the 1950's that people who actually worked on high-voltage transmission lines had diminished libidos. Unfortunately, the report couldn't separate the effects of exposure to electric fields from the effects of drinking too much vodka.
The fundamental theory is that if there is a link, it is due to the electric field from the power line. In reality, in most instances the electric field in a home is greater as a consequence of the wiring within the home than it is from power lines running near the home. Even so, most major utilities take pains to provide a wide right-of-way to separate high-voltage lines from adjacent homes.
The other consideration from fundamental theory is that if there is any cellular damage due to electric field, the affect will be exacerbated if the person remains stationery within the field for extended periods. Frankly, that means that the worst case scenario may actually be sleeping under an electric blanket - you tend to remain stationary while sleeping, and the electric blanket that is the source of the electric field actually wraps the body.
